The research seems pretty clear that to exfoliate your face on a regular basis is a good idea for scrubbing away old skin and leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed. However, there’s a little more to exfoliating than initially meets the eye. How and when you do it can make a big difference in the results.
To help you get the most out of your exfoliating regimen, we spoke with the skincare and beauty researchers at Callyssee Cosmetics for their top tips and tricks.
How to Exfoliate Your Face: 7 Tips to Get it Right
#1 Aim for 2-3 exfoliations per week
It is possible to overdo it with the exfoliating and leave your skin dry and irritated. That’s why it’s best to aim for no more than three times a week for normal skin or twice a week for dryer skin.
#2 Try a powder-based scrub for custom strength
While many exfoliating products already come in a liquid or cream form, the powder-based ones are an interesting choice because you can adjust the strength to your desire. Simply add less water for a stronger scrub or more to make it gentler.
#3 Use retinol at night
It really doesn’t matter what time of day you exfoliate, but retinol can have the most impact on the skin while you rest overnight. So if you’re using a retinol-based product, save your exfoliating for the evening.
#4 Be careful around the eyes
The eye area is particularly sensitive, so use caution before scrubbing that area. However, some products are specifically formulated to help the area around the eyes, so you can always look for a product with that purpose in mind.
#5 Separate the face and body
You may be tempted to use your body scrub on your face in a pinch, but it’s best to avoid this temptation. Body scrubs typically have larger grains and are more aggressive, so they’re not the best choice for your face.
#6 Try a bamboo baby washcloth
Washcloths are an excellent medium for both preparing your face for exfoliating and cleansing it afterward. The newer baby washcloths made from bamboo are a super-soft choice that will pamper your face.
#7 Open your pores before you begin
Before you begin scrubbing, take the time to open your pores for maximum effect. You can use steam for this, or place a hot washcloth over the face for 1-2 minutes to get the job done.
