Caffeine consumption and acne… is there a link? Acne is an embarrassment for women, and for many, that starts in their teen years, and can last for decades. Coffee is one of those things that people can’t live without.
Here’s what we know about caffeine consumption and acne:
The question is controversial, and the answer depends on who you ask, and when you ask. Depending on who you ask, you might hear a resounding yes. Others say that it’s not the caffeine in the coffee that causes the acne exactly, but the additions that people put into the coffee.
Dr. Amy Derick, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist from Illinois, told WebMD that the science behind the often-cited warning that coffee causes acne isn’t that strong.
“The idea that chocolate and caffeine cause acne has never really panned out,” she said. She continued to say that some studies reveal that the bacteria and hormones in milk products might influence acne breakouts. But she’d rather not tell 30-year-old women to avoid milk simply because of potential for acne breakouts.
Others point to other ways that caffeine intake can affect the body as a link between the ingredient and acne. Some say acne flares up for coffee drinkers because the caffeine has a diuretic effect on the body. But again, there are people who say it’s not the coffee to blame.
International facialist and wellbeing expert Abigail James says that she’s worked with individuals who drink coffee and those who drink green tea. She has seen just as many green tea drinkers who have adult acne. James is one of those who believes that maybe the additions to coffee drinks are part of the reason for adult acne breakouts.
This myth has persisted for decades, based on individuals drinking their caffeine. But at Callysee Cosmetics, we help you get your caffeine a different way. We believe that it’ll make you a believer in the benefits, not the risks, of caffeine for your skin.
If you’re curious about the effect that caffeine might have on your skin, we suggest that you consider a coffee face mask, and judge the results for yourself!
